UCF's Dr. Madsen named 2003 Outstanding Teacher

ORLANDO, Dec. 20, 2003 - UCF Professor of Chemistry Dr. Brooks Madsen was honored by the American Chemical Society as a 2003 Outstanding Teacher at a Four-Year College. Each year, the American Chemical Society (ACS) and its regional chapters award the "Outstanding Teacher" title to professors who have excelled at instruction, collaboration, and research.

The honor affirms what UCF alumni have recognized for more than 30 years. Dr. Madsen maintains an unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching and to the success of his students. He is revered by his peers and pupils alike. New faculty members consistently seek Madsen's advice and input.

Dr. Madsen has taught at UCF since 1970. He devised the undergraduate Analytical Chemistry courses and, together with Dr. Michael Hampton, created a video series which trains students to use the instruments in the laboratory. Dr. Madsen stresses critical thinking and problem-solving in his classroom.

Dr. Madsen serves as Assistant Chair to the Department of Chemistry and as Chair of the Undergraduate Education Committee. His research interests include acid rain, environmental analytical chemistry, and flow injection analysis. His project entitled "Characterization and Evaluation of Acid Rain in East-Central Florida" has received continuous funding from NASA since 1977.
